Home Cleaning Swaps
The cleanest laundry detergents, washing up liquids and household cleaning alternatives available in the UK. All properly certified. All with links so you can find them quickly.
Why your cleaning products matter
Cleaning products are one of the least scrutinised sources of chemical exposure in the home. Unlike food and cosmetics, manufacturers in the UK are not legally required to disclose every ingredient on the label. The word fragrance can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. The word antibacterial often signals triclosan or similar compounds linked to hormonal disruption.
Laundry detergent residue stays in fabric after washing. You wear it against your skin all day. Washing up liquid stays on dishes. Household cleaning sprays release compounds into the air you breathe for hours after use. This is not occasional exposure. It is daily, constant and cumulative.
The good news is that clean alternatives now work just as well as conventional products. The swaps below are our honest recommendations based on certification, ingredient transparency and real world performance.

Find on Amazon UK →What about Ecover? Ecover is widely available and markets itself as eco friendly but contains sodium laureth sulfate which is known to be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen. It is better than most mainstream detergents but does not meet the standard of the products above.

Dishwasher Tablets
Conventional dishwasher tablets are among the most chemically dense cleaning products in the home. Optical brighteners coat dishes after washing and are then consumed with food. Synthetic fragrance and bleaching agents are also common. Residues remain on dishes and cutlery after every cycle.

Find on Amazon UK →Fabric Softener
Conventional fabric softeners are one of the worst offenders in the laundry category. They work by coating fabric fibres with a layer of chemicals designed to make clothes feel soft and smell fragrant. Those chemicals sit against your skin all day and are not rinsed out. Most contain synthetic fragrance, quaternary ammonium compounds and preservatives of concern.
OUR TOP PICK
Greenscents Organic Fabric Conditioner
Soil Association COSMOS Organic · Palm Oil Free · Vegan · Leaping Bunny · No Synthetic Fragrance · Refillable
94% organic, made with plant derived softening agents and essential oils only. No synthetic fragrance, no optical brighteners, no petroleum derivatives. Available in Nonscents fragrance-free version which is the cleanest option. The same rigorous Soil Association COSMOS certification as the laundry liquid. Refill options available.
Visit Greenscents →The free alternative: Half a cup of white vinegar added to the rinse cycle softens fabric naturally, removes detergent residue and leaves no smell once dry. It costs almost nothing and contains nothing that needs certifying. Wool dryer balls are another effective option that soften clothes mechanically without any chemical coating.
What to avoid on labels
A single word that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals including phthalates. If a product is scented, the label should name the specific essential oils used. Anything simply listed as fragrance is hiding its formula.
Synthetic chemicals that coat fabric fibres to make clothes appear whiter under UV light. They serve no cleaning function, do not rinse out and sit against your skin all day. Several are suspected endocrine disruptors.
Preservatives and biocides linked to skin sensitisation and allergic reactions. Benzisothiazolinone is listed as a substance of very high concern by the European Chemicals Agency. Common in mainstream cleaning products and eco-labelled products alike.
Water-softening additives that improve cleaning performance but cause significant ecological harm when they enter waterways. Phosphates are banned in many jurisdictions but phosphonates remain unregulated and common even in some eco-labelled products.
This claim on a cleaning product usually signals triclosan or similar compounds linked to hormonal disruption and antimicrobial resistance. Regular soap and hot water is as effective as antibacterial products for household cleaning without the chemical load.
The cleaning products under your sink are doing the same job they always did. The question is what else they are doing at the same time. The alternatives above clean just as well. They just do not bring anything else with them.
One swap at a time is enough. Start with whatever you run out of next.
