Sunscreen Swaps
Chemical sunscreen filters are absorbed into the bloodstream within minutes of application. Mineral alternatives sit on the surface and reflect UV rays without any absorption.
Why chemical sunscreens are a concern
Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays and converting them to heat. The active filters, including oxybenzone, octinoxate and homosalate, are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. The FDA found these chemicals in blood, urine and breast milk after a single application, at concentrations that persisted for weeks.
Oxybenzone is one of the most studied and has been found to disrupt estrogen and testosterone signalling in laboratory studies. Homosalate has been flagged by the European Commission which proposes limiting its concentration to 1.4% in sunscreens. Current US formulas are permitted to use up to 15%.
Mineral sunscreens using non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide work differently. They sit on the surface of the skin and physically reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them. Neither has been linked to hormonal disruption and the FDA has confirmed both as safe and effective.
Note on white cast: Non-nano mineral sunscreens can leave a slight white cast on the skin. Tinted formulas reduce this significantly. On deeper skin tones a tinted mineral SPF is worth seeking specifically. The absence of chemical filters is worth the minor cosmetic compromise.

These are the only active ingredients the FDA has confirmed as safe and effective in sunscreen. They physically reflect UV rather than absorbing into the skin.
Found in blood weeks after a single application. Linked to hormonal disruption in laboratory studies. Also harmful to coral reefs.
European Commission proposes limiting to 1.4%. US sunscreens currently permitted to use up to 15%. Avoid products listing it regardless of concentration.
Absorbed through skin and detected in breast milk. Banned in Hawaii and several other jurisdictions for reef damage.
Sunscreen is applied to large areas of skin and left on all day. Synthetic fragrance in sunscreen represents significant daily exposure to undisclosed chemicals.
Sun protection matters. Chemical sunscreen is significantly better than no sunscreen. But mineral alternatives offer the same protection without the absorption concern, and certified organic mineral formulas are now widely available and genuinely effective.
Protect your skin from the sun. Do it without adding to your chemical load.
